| Hi my name is Mike. I have been shooting since September 2004 as a member of Clophill Archery Club. I picked up my first bow in 1960 and competed until 1972. It was a very different sport then! The bows were very simple- no buttons, stabilisers, clickers etc. I was British Champion in 1968 and '72. At this time my equipment was stolen and I decided to try something different and sexy( !!!) so it was on to basketball and athletics until 1990. I did fairly well at these representing GB on a number of times. Sport took a back seat for a number of years partly due to the fact that I was weary of the uncertainty of the changes within disabled sport and I was working full time and commuting to London every day. It was by chance in 2004 at an event at Wrest Park, Beds that my wife encouraged me to have a go at the Clophill Archery Demo. to see if I still had it! Little did she know that was the start of a fulfilling and busy time where I became drawn back into the competitive sporting world. At the start of 2007 I made my mind up to enter the British and European Paraplegics' Championships at Stoke Mandeville Stadium. To everyones' surprise, myself included, I became British Champion and was asked to represent GB at then World Championships in Korea in October. I had a successful trip getting a PB and am now ranked 36th in the world. There's a lot of work to still do as I would love to go to Beijing in
2008. The club continues to give me a lot of support as do many others with
help and advice on equipment. |
